Christ the Redeemer is an art deco statue of Jesus Christ located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was created by French-Polish sculpture Paul Landowski and built by the brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa. The project started in 1922 and was completed in 1931 as it overlooks the Rio skyline. The statue is over 90 feet tall and stretches almost 30 ft in diameter. The statue is made of soapstone and reinforced concrete. The statue stands on Corcovado mountain and was originally designed to have held a globe and a cross but the idea was scraped. The statue weighs 635 metric tons and is the largest art deco statue in the world.
