The colloseum is a eliptical ampitheatre located in Rome, Italy. It is the largest and oldest standing ampitheatre in the owrld and construction began under the emperor Vespasian in 72 CE and it was completed in 80 CE. The colosseum was originaly named the Flavian Ampitheatre after the patron emperor dynasty that oversaw it. The colosseum is built of tavertine limestone and is capable of holding 50-80 thousand people. It was used for gladiators as well as other public specatacles including, executions, animal hunts and more. Many stone robbers and earthquakes have diminished the beauty of the colosseum but it still stands as a symbol of imperial rome's glory. It is also found on the Italian version of the 5 euro coin.
